The memory of the United States is preserved through The National Archive - the institution responsible for protecting the documents that define the nation’s laws, identity, and democratic accountability.

From the Charters of Freedom to billions of federal records, it safeguards the evidence of government action and the stories of the American people.

But the Archives is more than a repository: it’s a public trust, a cultural institution, and increasingly a political battleground. For the first time, under the current administration, the US Archivist has been fired, and under shady and still unknown circumstances.

Well, that archivist is with us on the podcast, and she explains what happened in her own words. Spoiler alert: she has no idea either.

That was Colleen Shogan, the former Archivist of the United States who was fired by President Trump last year, opening up about her experience, and the total lack of transparency around her dismissal.

Colleen discusses this and the history and legacy of the National Archive in one of our most revealing episodes ever.
